An atomic force microscope(AFM) is the only microscope that can measure submicron images of a sample’s surface with the sample being submerged in a liquid. The dunk and scan option includes a probe holder and liquid cell.

In this design, the laser passes through a glass window and a small amount of liquid, and is then reflected off the cantilever. After reflecting off the cantilever, the light passes through the liquid and then through the glass window. For scanning in liquids, the Dunk and Scan Probe Holder is typically much simpler to use than an environmental cell.

SCANNING PROCEDURE
The following procedure is followed for scanning samples with the dunk and scan option.
- Mount the sample and probe in the microscope
- Alight the laser and photodetector.
- Bring the probe to the sample, scan in air
- Tip retract a few microns.
- Add liquid via the fill tube.
- Re-align the laser and photodetector
- Probe approach
- Scan the sample

The liquid vessel used in the Dunk and Scan option has a sample holder, fill tube, and viewing window. The sample holder uses magnets to hold a standard AFM sample disk.
