1 X 1 um image of cyclic DNA with bound protein; Courtesy of Justin Peters; University of North Iowa
High resolution atomic force microscope (AFM) vibrating mode height image of a cyclic DNA molecule with bound protein.
DNA-protein interaction are fundamental to life, and involved in many essential molecular and cellular mechanisms, including DNA repair, gene transcription, DNA packing, and viral infection.
AFM is an ideal tool to observe DNA-protein interactions because it is possible to obtain sub-molecular resolution of complexes with out any staining or other alteration to the molecules, and can be carried out in ambient or liquid environments.
